The Truth About Sugar in Wine (And How to Drink Better)

If you are watching your carbs, following a keto lifestyle, or simply want to make better health choices, you have probably asked yourself: How much sugar is actually in this glass of wine? Unfortunately, winemakers are not legally required to list nutritional information or sugar content on the label. This lack of transparency makes it incredibly difficult to make informed choices.

At Keto Wines, we believe you deserve to know exactly what you are drinking.

Why Does Wine Have Sugar?

All wine starts with sugar. During the winemaking process, yeast consumes the natural sugars found in grapes and converts them into alcohol.

In a fully fermented, "bone dry" wine, the yeast consumes almost all the sugar. However, many commercial winemakers stop the fermentation process early or add grape juice concentrate back into the wine before bottling. This leftover sugar is called residual sugar (RS).

Winemakers often use high levels of residual sugar to mask the taste of poor-quality grapes or to make the wine taste smoother and more appealing to a mass market.

How Much Sugar is in a Standard Glass of Wine?

Because labels don’t tell the whole story, it is easy to accidentally consume your entire daily sugar allowance in just two glasses.

  • Standard Commercial White Wines (like Pinot Gris or generic Sauvignon Blanc): Can contain anywhere from 5g to over 15g of sugar per litre.
  • Red Wines (like Shiraz or generic Pinot Noir): While generally lower than whites, many popular mass-market reds still contain 3g to 15g of sugar per litre to create a "jammy" flavour profile.
  • Rosé: Can be highly deceptive, often containing upwards of 15g to 30g of sugar per litre to enhance the sweet, fruity notes.

We have analysed some data from the LCBO who are one of the largest wine retailers in the world (and only one of a few who publish sugar contents of wine) - read the findings here.

If you are aiming for a low-carb or keto-friendly diet, these hidden sugars can instantly knock you out of ketosis or stall your fitness progress, or if you are diabetic it can impact your blood sugar.

Which Wines Have the Lowest Sugar and Carbs?

If you want to enjoy a glass of wine that you know has lower sugar, you need to look for wines that are fully fermented and explicitly tested for residual sugar.

We do the hard work for you. At Keto Wines, we source premium New Zealand wines that are independently lab-tested so we can provide you with the exact sugar content. We only stock wines that are low in sugar.

For example, our Fuchsia Gully Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2025 contains an exact sugar content of just 0.72g/L—a fraction of what you will find in standard supermarket brands.

If you prefer a rose, our Fuchsia Gully Reduced Sugar Pinot Noir Rosé is crafted to be crisp and refreshing with only 0.73g/L of sugar.

100% Transparency for Better Choices

You shouldn't have to guess what is in your glass. By choosing independently tested, low-sugar wines, you can enjoy the social and relaxing aspects of a great New Zealand vintage without compromising your health goals.
